"One That Shows What Photography Can Really Mean"

"A Family Story Of How One Woman's Love For Her Family Caused Her To Stop And Save One Family Memento On Her Way Out Of Her Burning House..."

I want to tell you a true story, one that will bring tears to your eyes. As hard as it may sound, this actually happened.

Some years ago, a colleague of mine was asked to photograph a wedding. The bride's name was Sharon and the wedding was perfect and the photographs turned out nicely. Now fast-forward to two and a half years.

Two and a half years of wedded bliss, Sharon and her husband moved into a beautiful home in a nice part of town. They had decorated the home just the way they liked it. They had even adorned some of their tables and shelves with family heirlooms that had been handed down from parents and grandparents. Then, one of the things we fear the most happened.

A terrible fire started, and began to burn their home and possessions to the ground. Thank goodness for smoke alarms because everyone got out of the house all right. But what happened on the way out may startle you.

Just imagine standing outside your house, watching it, and all your cherished memories, consumed in flames. I don't suppose any of us can really know what that feels like, unless we've actually been through it.

But as Sharon ran through her burning house, trying to get to safety, a thought ran through her mind. While running past all the wonderful memories she'd spent a lifetime lovingly collecting, she knew she only had time to safely grab one of them.

Without giving it any real thought, Sharon only grabbed the album containing the wedding photographs that were created of her and her family. Holding that album to her chest, and protecting it almost like a child, she ran from the flame-engulfed home.

In tears, Sharon was devastated by the tragedy. Fortunately, she'd saved the one thing that was most important to her, her wedding album. She knew the negatives were kept and she also knew that a new album could be made, but this album was so important to her, she couldn't bear the thought of it being destroyed.

Sharon realized that one of the things that can never be replaced are the things that we must hold on to, which are memories we share with those we love. Life is so terribly short but at the same time, life is such a wonderful gift and the memories we keep of those moments with our family will last forever.

This very story sums up the reason why I became a photographer. It is to create photographs that mean so much to you that it becomes priceless. I can't imagine anything that would make me feel more fulfilled as an artist.
